Once is enough. It's like the President said, "fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again." Well, many, including myself, got fooled again when AT&T inadvertently published a webpage indicating all iPhone users (except those with unlocked ones) will have free unlimited access to the 17,000 WiFi locations operated by Ma Bell.
That was then. Now, CNET, among others, are reported that AT&T has rescinded that offer and said that iPhones will be added to Laptop Connect program later in the year but until then, we'll continue to screw with your heads. We just have to wait and see. But my question for AT&T is why not now?
You already offer WiFi access to your DSL subscribers. The wireless market is just as competitive if not more so it would make sense to offer added incentives to keep your customers loyal and attract potential switchers. Personally, I was ecstatic when I learned that AT&T was taking over the WiFi AP at Starbucks from T-Mobile. As an AT&T DSL subscriber and with eight Starbucks for me to choose from, I was in mobility heaven.
This was what was originally said on the webpage before it was taken down:
"AT&T knows Wi-Fi is hot, and free Wi-Fi even hotter, which is why we are proud to offer iPhone customers free access to the nation's largest Wi-Fi hot-spot network with more than 17,000 hot spots, including Starbucks. Now users can relax and access music, e-mail, and Web browsing services with their favorite blend in hand from the comfort of their favorite location."
I suppose we would just have to wait for what we know is coming. Mobile warriors, be patient.
Note: AT&T, don't fire whoever screwed up. The poor guy like went through the iPhone launch and was exhausted. He's sooo ready for the weekend. Give him Monday off.
