Apparently, there is a great competition among various groups vying for the title of the biggest, most efficient, and powerful wind turbines and a new design from a British team based on a spinning leaf can be a challenger to the Americans and other EU teams. More importantly, it will be operational in 2014 (according to The Guardian).
While the Guardian has more about the competition, I’ll focus on the whole of these giant turbines. Each turbine will be able to provide up to 10,000 homes with electricity.
More than that, the scale of Aerogenerator can be increased to 20MW. Still, there is much work to be done. Europe hope to have 150GW of wind-generated power by 2030. At 10MW per turbine, it would take about 3,000 structures. A mammoth undertaking no doubt that but given the Europeans more liberal energy policy, it is achievable.
And for the US? We have a President who is more open to alternative energy and with the recent BP disaster, perhaps there is hope for a strong energy bill. However, since the Senate has decided to shelve any work on it until after the midterm elections, perhaps there is a chance we might have an energy policy designed to get us off oil and stimulate the economy at the same time.
